About Us

A lot happened before our Bed & Breakfast training courses came about ! Our B&B journey started back in 2005 when Richard said to Elaine, “I’ve seen a B&B for sale in the south of France doing motorbike tours…what do you think ?”

At the time, Richard was working in IT roles for a number of companies and on a self employed basis. Elaine had spent her early career in retail management before becoming a driving instructor for over 22 years. She had also run a busy pub.

That conversation got us both thinking and 18 months later we bought an established 5/6 bedroom guest house and self catering business in Aviemore in the Scottish Highlands. After several years we decided to downsize and opened our 2 room B&B, The Red Townhouse in Penrith, Cumbria in 2015, converting a domestic house into our new B&B.

Despite all the northern locations, we are both southerners, Elaine originally from North London and Richard from Bournemouth. Prior to our hospitality career, we have both lived and worked in various parts of the UK, so being slightly nomadic is part of who we are.

Development of our B&B courses came from two things – Elaine’s adult teaching qualifications from her time not just teaching people to drive, but teaching some to become driving instructors, together with constant questions in Scotland about what it’s like, how do we do this and that ? And often at breakfast, what will you be doing for the rest of the day after breakfast ! Add to that our own experiences in the early days in Aviemore, learning as we went and making mistakes along the way !

We started small back in 2010 and have built up the number of bed & breakfast training courses we do each year since then. The course content has evolved and changed over that time to take account of the ever changing hospitality scene and of course any changes in the legal framework.
